How to Choose Majlis Seating: Frames, Foam Density and Fabric

Short answer: good majlis seating comes down to three things: a strong frame, the right foam density and a fabric that suits how the room is used. At Al Malek Carpentry, we build frames from solid wood and plywood, use foam of at least 30 kg/m³ (40 kg/m³ for a firmer, longer-lasting seat) and make every majlis to the exact size of the room in our Ras Al Khaimah workshop.

1. Start with the room

Majlis seating is built to measure, so the room comes first. Before we design anything, we visit for a free site measurement and note the walls, windows, doors, power points and where the TV or wall panels will go. Then we prepare a free 3D design showing the seating layout, tables and walls together, so you can see how guests will sit before anything is built.

2. The frame: what holds the seating together

The frame carries the weight of every guest, every day. We build majlis and sofa frames from solid wood combined with plywood. Plywood is made of cross-laminated layers, so it holds screws and joints firmly. We prefer it to MDF for seating frames because it is stronger and more stable under daily load.

3. Foam density: soft or firm

Foam density, measured in kg/m³, decides how a seat feels and how long it keeps its shape.

40 kg/m³ (premium)Firmer, holds its shape longerGuest majlis with heavy use, and anyone who prefers a firm seat

We never go below 30 kg/m³. If you are unsure, sit on both foam samples at our showroom before you decide.

4. Fabric and colours

You choose the fabric and colours yourself. Fabric samples are kept at our showroom, so you can compare colours and textures in person, then we upholster the seating to match the room.

5. Plan the whole room together

A majlis looks finished when everything matches. Together with the seating, we make coffee tables, wall panels, TV units and CNC-cut jali or mashrabiya details, all from the same workshop and the same design, so materials and colours stay consistent.

Frequently asked questions

What foam density is best for a majlis?

For everyday family use, 30 kg/m³ foam is comfortable and is our minimum. For a guest majlis that is used heavily, or if you prefer a firmer seat, choose 40 kg/m³, which holds its shape longer. You can sit on both at our showroom before you decide.

What should a majlis frame be made of?

We build frames from solid wood with plywood. Plywood is made of cross-laminated layers, so it holds joints and screws firmly and the frame stays stable under daily use. We prefer it to MDF for seating frames.

Can I see fabrics and foam before ordering?

Yes. Fabric samples and foam samples are kept at our showroom on Al Mataf Road, Al Mamourah, Ras Al Khaimah. You can compare colours and textures and feel the difference between 30 and 40 kg/m³ foam before approving your design.

Can majlis seating be made for a small room?

Yes. Every majlis is built to measure, so we can plan seating along one or two walls and size the seat depth and height to the room. The free 3D design shows the layout before production starts.

Do you make the tables and wall panels too?

Yes. We design and build coffee tables, wall panels, TV units and CNC-cut jali or mashrabiya details together with the seating, so the whole majlis matches in materials and colour.

Is the measurement and design free?

Yes. The site measurement and the 3D design are both free, and we start production only after you approve the design and the quotation.
